Being part of Boma

At Boma, we invest heavily in growing a culture we’re proud of.

Our high-trust / high-performance culture is defined and embedded by our Behavioural Aspirations: how we commit to showing up together to deliver on our ambitions.

Our onboarding includes attendance at the Dare to Lead™ programme and an educational experience about Aotearoa New Zealand’s indigenous context.

Our hauora (wellbeing) policy creates space for all team members to use two hours per week of their full-time working hours for active and intentional investment in wellbeing.

We have a clearly articulated and ongoing commitment to DEI and cultural competency, supported with tangible actions.

At Boma, it is far more important for us to be learning than it is for us to be right. Continuous learning is a constant in all that we do, and we invest heavily in it at all levels, including but not limited to multifaceted professional development opportunities.

"There is something utterly refreshing about coming into an environment where the culture is championed by the entire team and demonstrated openly. A culture where courageous conversations are consistently had, and vulnerability is seen as a strength not a weakness. Boma embodies what we teach our leaders and our communities on a daily basis. I feel extremely fortunate to be a part of this extraordinary team.”

The Boma Culture

Boma sits at the intersection of hunger and heart.

We are wildly ambitious. We’re here to achieve great things, and to push ourselves and each other to perform at our maximum potential.

At the same time, we are fiercely compassionate. We are one team and care deeply about each other. We’re not interested in individual advancement at each other’s expense; we support and encourage each other to be our best selves.

This intersection is a challenging place to work. Our aspirations and demands on ourselves are not for everyone. We navigate constant tension — the tension between pressure and calm, between effort and regeneration, between ambition and presence. Rather than being mutually exclusive, these polarities support each other:

  • We must be calm to deal with pressure.
  • We must regenerate to sustain our efforts.
  • We must be present to achieve our ambitions.

Navigating this tension requires us to show up in particular ways.

We recognise that we’re not experiencing the Boma culture, we are the Boma culture. We’re individually accountable for our collective experience.

Our bicultural context

Boma embraces our bicultural context.

We recognise and honour Māori as tangata whenua of Aotearoa New Zealand, and recognise and honour Ngāi Tūāhuriri as mana whenua of Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Our commitments to our bicultural context include:

  • Actively learning more about our history and te Tiriti o Waitangi,
  • Learning Māori tikanga to build confidence and cultural competency (such as at the learning day at Tuahiwi Marae, or a local equivalent for team members not in Ōtautahi),
  • Engaging appropriately with tikanga for our programmes and offerings (eg mihi to mana whenua for virtual events, karakia kai at in-person events),
  • Embracing concepts of whanaungatanga (relationships) and manaakitanga (welcome and care),
  • Incorporating te reo Māori into our everyday correspondence,
  • Encouraging staff to learn and use their pepeha, and
  • Where appropriate, incorporating Māori concepts into our policies, eg using the framework of Te Whare Tapa Whā for our hauora policy.

We seek opportunities to respectfully, authentically and appropriately partner with tangata whenua in our work.

Our Behavioural Aspirations

The five Boma Behavioural Aspirations define our culture: how we commit to showing up together to deliver on our ambitions.

  1. We create impact
  2. We’re hungry for learning and growth
  3. We speak up
  4. We’re trustworthy
  5. We’re here because we choose to be here

We agree that these behaviours are essential to a team that is both caring and relentlessly ambitious.
