Leading the Future

Created in partnership with Springboard Trust, Leading the Future is an innovative, online, cohort-based programme for school leaders in the Canterbury, Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough regions.

With generous support from the Rātā Foundation, this pilot programme brings together Springboard Trust’s unique cross-sector model and experience building the strategic leadership capability of school leaders with Boma’s expertise in supporting leaders and changemakers to be more intentional, intelligent, and courageous about the future through transformational learning experiences.

Leading the Future supports leaders in education to:

  • think like a futurist,

  • understand how to build equity into problem-solving, and

  • lead and execute change strategically.

The programme is open to school leaders at any level who:

  • are committed to addressing inequity in our education system

  • have an idea, project, or strategic initiative they plan to lead in their school that can be designed and scoped through the programme.

Springboard Trust is an impact organisation working within the education sector. They work to transform schools by developing strategic leadership on an individual and team level and by bringing leaders from the education, private, public and philanthropic sectors together to facilitate insightful learning and embed impactful change. The reason they do this is simple: the belief that effective, strategic leadership transforms schools which ultimately improves student outcomes.

Rātā Foundation is the core supporter of Leading the Future. Their major grants are designed to support people to have equitable opportunities to learn throughout their lives as a pathway to reach their potential.

Boma’s journey to Leading the Future started with our Education Fellowship — a year-long programme that ran over the course of 2019, 2020 and 2021 and made a significant contribution to the social and educational wellbeing of Canterbury.

In 2018, Boma CEO Kaila Colbin and Christchurch Airport CEO Malcolm Johns met for coffee and formed the idea of developing a leadership programme specifically for Canterbury educators exploring exponential thinking, courageous leadership and technology for transformative educational outcomes. This is the beginning of Education Fellows.

Generously powered by Christchurch Airport, Boma Education Fellows enabled three groups of 10 motivated, Canterbury-based secondary school educators to explore ways of bringing exponential thinking, teacher excellence and innovative leadership into their schools.
