About Sir Wayne Smith

Sir Wayne Smith is a true legend in the world of rugby. Known affectionately as "The Professor" for his tactical genius, Wayne has made an unforgettable impact as both a player and coach. He spent 16 years as an assistant coach with the All Blacks, earning a reputation as one of the greatest coaches in the game’s history.

Wayne's coaching journey began with Canterbury and then the Crusaders, where he guided the team to back-to-back Super Rugby titles in 1998 and 1999. These successes were paired with his role as an assistant coach for the All Blacks. From 2000 to 2001, he took on the role of All Blacks Head Coach before a stint with Northampton in England. He returned to New Zealand in 2004 to join Graham Henry’s coaching staff, where his expertise played a huge part in the All Blacks’ 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cup victories. Wayne is one of only two coaches to win two back-to-back Rugby World Cups, a testament to his incredible coaching ability.

Wayne’s innovative approach, including his embrace of technology and his special ability to nurture younger players, earned him praise from fellow coaches like Steve Hansen. His influence was also felt with the Chiefs, leading them to back-to-back Super Rugby titles in 2012 and 2013.

In 2022, Wayne’s coaching magic continued as he led the Black Ferns to Rugby World Cup glory, and he was named Coach of the Year at the World Rugby Awards. With a career filled with incredible achievements, Wayne Smith’s legacy in rugby is firmly cemented as one of the sport’s finest minds.
