Boma New Zealand is delighted to have sponsored this year’s Young Enterprise Scheme Canterbury Regional Finals and proud to provide the support rangatahi to become more skilled leaders and entrepreneurs.
Six teams of rangatahi came together at the end of October for the Canterbury Regional Finals to pitch the real businesses they have developed over the course of the year. Over 500 senior secondary school students participated in the YES programme in Canterbury, creating a product or service, developing a business and selling to real buyers. The eight finalists showed creativity and innovation, while awareness of environmental issues also played a large part in product conceptualisation.
Josh McKernan, Lukas Hornell, Finn McCabe, and Eddie Hogan came out on top at the Young Enterprise Scheme regional finals and awards with their new product named JELF.
JELF is a big thinking team that have created an environmentally friendly alternative to A4 and A3 laminating pouches. They function identically to existing laminating pouches but are better for the environment ”from production through to disposal”.
Finn said the members put their heads together at the start of the year in a bid to invent a new product as part of their business studies project.
He said as they discussed their ideas, they wrote them down on a sheet of laminated paper.
However, it ended up being the laminated paper itself which sparked their product idea.
In addition to the top award, the group also won the opportunity to present JELF at the national finals in Wellington on 4 December.
As part of our support of the YES Canterbury Regional finals, we’ve awarded each JELF team member a place at one of the Boma New Zealand leadership programmes in 2020. We look forward to helping this awesome group of rangatahi take their business and leadership journey to the next level.
